About Julie

Sea Glass Sydney Counselling and Consulting is run by Julie Porteous, a Social Worker with over 20 years experience working directly with individuals and families affected by violence, abuse and neglect.

Julie is a member of the Australian Association of Social Workers, and an Approved Counsellor with the Victims of Crime Counselling Scheme. In 2025, Julie was nominated for the Allied Health Professional of the Year Award in Northern Sydney.

Julie provides counselling to individuals of all ages and genders. Julie's approach is relational and client-centred and as a trauma specialist, she has the skills to work with you to safely address the impact that experiences of violence, abuse and trauma have had on your life.

In additional to her therapeutic work, Julie offers supervision and consultation to professionals, and body safety workshops to parents and organisations.

Julie has previously worked as a researcher and trainer. In these roles, Julie developed national-level resources on best practice in supporting people affected by sexual violence. She also prepared and delivered tailored training on sexual violence and domestic and family violence to large organisations.

Why Sea Glass?

Julie chose the name Sea Glass for her counselling and consulting service for a number of reasons:

  • Sea glass is usually the end result of objects being discarded, cast away;

  • Sea glass has often had a perilous, difficult journey, potentially over many years, which is unknown to anyone who encounters it;

  • Sea glass is tough and strong;

  • Sea glass is more beautiful and valuable at the end of its journey than at the start.

The story of how Sea glass is formed has many parallels to people who have experienced abuse, violence and trauma, making it a meaningful choice for a trauma-specific counselling service.
